Biography

Stefano Bernasconi is Professor for isotope biogeochemistry at the Geological Institute of the ETH Zürich and heads the Stable Isotope and Organic Geochemistry Laboratory. His research focuses on the study of biogeochemical processes in terrestrial, lacustrine and marine environments, and in the development of novel analytical techniques for solving earth science questions. His scientific interests range form biogeochemistry of sulfur isotopes, the links between the C, N and P cycles in terrestrial and lacustrine ecosystems, the build-up of organic carbon in soils, paleoclimatology, and the study of active hydrothermal systems. Current projects include the development of the novel technique of "clumped isotope" geochemistry and is application to paleoclimate reconstruction, compound-specific radiocarbon analysis of sedimentary biomarkers for the study of carbon cycling, and oxygen isotope geochemistry of phosphates in soils. In the last 3 years he has also led the interdisciplinary project BigLink focussing on soil formation which has led to the establishment of the Damma Glacier Critical Zone Observatory within SoilTrEC.
