The EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection identifies ecosysterm services for soil that are valued at over 38 billion Euros annually and must be protected for the EU economy and for the wellbeing of future generations. These include :

- Filtering water
- Buffering contaminants
- Transforming nutrients
- Storing carbon
- Biological habitat
- Contributing significantly to Earth's gene pool
